The Iron County Sheriff's Office is proud to announce its third annual Citizens Academy. The academy will be held from September 9th, 2008 to November 11th, 2008. The classes will be held once a week on Tuesday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. at the Iron County Sheriff's Office. This 30 hour block of training will provide the students with a better understanding of how law enforcement operates in Iron County along with the abilities we have and the limitations we have to deal with on a daily basis.
It is the goal of this academy is to promote a friendly working relationship between the public and the Iron County Sheriff's Office. By doing this we hope to erase some of the common myths and misconceptions of law enforcement by providing accurate information about the Iron County Sheriff's Office and how laws are applied to each situation. Students will learn by class room lecture and hands on experience.
Topics that will be covered are the history of the Iron County Sheriff's Office, law and overview of court system, pursuit driving, use of force, tour of correctional facility, different divisions with in the Sheriff's Office, crime scene investigations, crime prevention, community oriented policing, neighborhood watch programs and other subjects related to law enforcement.
To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and be a resident of Iron County. Applicants must be able to attend 8 of the scheduled 10 classes to be eligible to graduate, and applicants must have no prior criminal history or pending criminal cases in order to be accepted into the academy. This academy will be limited to 20 students. At the end of this academy students will not have any law enforcement powers, this academy is only intended to educate the public on how law enforcement operates in Iron County.
